It is very important when dealing with any problems to make sure you are fully focused on the real source and have not gone off onto a tangent. This is especially true of addiction where it is the addict in front of you causing problems and issues day after day.
The addict may not be aware of the quantity of harm they cause. Whether it is just neglect, no longer taking interest in family, partners or children. Or it has progressed to financial problems, money disappearing, bills accruing, or it can be legal problems and worst of all abuse. Getting into fights, caught with drugs, drunk at work, the possibilities are endless and they stare you in the face.
The addict is not the source of your problems, the addiction is.
Remember back to before the addiction began.
Did you have a loving and kind partner/friend/parent/child?
You probably did. That is why you have stuck with them through it all, this long.
They themselves as a person are probably feeling guilty, unhappy and miserable in their condition. Whether or not that is what they let on.
The problem is that addiction takes over a life. It commands feeding, more alcohol, more drugs. Things get desperate and that’s where crime can come into it.
I bet they still love you, maybe they haven’t said it in a while, maybe it’s no longer obvious. But your loved one is hidden underneath the effects of drugs. Mental and physical effects or cravings become their life.
When you talk to them and get them to face their addiction this is an important message to remember, otherwise you will find yourself angry and hurt at the addict. What they need to see is your love and care. That way they can break through the fog and make the right decision to do something about the addiction.
