The Dangers of Tramadol

Trmadol

There have been recent stories of the dangers of Tramadol, particularly in Northern Ireland.

It has been stated that if taken correctly, on prescription, it is not dangerous; but there are high risks when taken incorrectly and when taken in combination with other drugs or alcohol.

There were 33 deaths just in Northern Ireland linked to Tramadol, ranging a huge span of the populace, including a teenage girl and a retired man.

“I don't think that people realise how potentially risky taking Tramadol is.
I think it’s because it’s a prescription drug—people assume it’s safe.
– PROFESSOR JACK CRANE, STATE PATHOLOGIST FOR NI

Due to being medicinal and available on prescription, people often don’t realise how potent or how dangerous Tramadol can be. It is an opiate-based painkiller, meaning it is of a similar base as heroin, which means that addiction is totally possible.

In 2014, it was classified as an illegal Class C drug; that means that on prescription it is legal, but taken illegally it is Class C. But with these recent deaths, there is talk of it being reclassified as a Class A drug.

Leading doctors are backing this call, as addicts from prescription drug abuse, are threatening GPs trying to get access to further pills for themselves, or to pass on to dealers.

"We’re getting multiple patients coming in addicted to multiple drugs, abusing anything they can get their hands on …Tramadol has become one of those drugs of abuse and we’re getting a lot of patients trying to get more and more… They (addicts) won’t leave the room without them (prescriptions), some of them threaten you, some of them threaten violence.”
– Dr. Tom Black

It is good to see these dangers being reported on. Hopefully, with the facts of the matter becoming known, combined with a potential reclassification, this will cause the demand for this addictive painkiller to decrease.
