Fabric—Right or Wrong Decision?

Shocking news as we hear that Fabric, one of the best-known clubs in London got its licence revoked by the council this week. Based in Farringdon, it is world-known for its dub-step, house, drum and bass and techno music.

The council revoked the Farringdon venue's licence in the early hours of Wednesday, after finding it had a "culture of drug use" which staff were "incapable of controlling."

Unfortunately, alongside its music, Fabric was well known for its drug culture. Earlier this year two teenage boys died following consumption of drugs in the club (see article here www.standard.co.uk/news/london/pictured-the-two-teenagers-who-died-after-taking-drugs-at-fabric-nightclub-a3337656.html) leading to its temporary closure, and now what looks to be its permanent closure.

Rave and dance music is often home to party drugs. For this reason, you can see why police and the council felt that something had to be done about it.

The Mayor, Mr Khan, said that London has lost 50 per cent of its nightclubs and 40 per cent of its live music venues over the last eight years.

What a devastating figure that is! Dancing and music is an essential part of the culture and especially true of an international city such as London.

To me, this is the issue, we as a country need to face that we do have a drug problem. Clubs do need to take responsibility for limiting its acceptance and addressing the drug culture associated with the music. On the other hand, the closure of our clubs and music venues is a disgrace to the country and the international city that London is.

Closing a club does not eliminate the consumer demand for drugs. This is what truly needs to be tackled. Close one club the dancers and party goers are going to find another, or they will resort to taking the drugs at home.

We need to work on eliminating the demand for drugs with successful education and rehabilitation so that party going and nightlife can be enjoyed in safety and the police and council don’t slowly resort to eliminating our much-loved venues!
