How You Can Help to Save the Life of a Loved One Suffering from Drug or Alcohol Addiction

It can be devastating for many people to discover that a loved one has become addicted to drugs or alcohol. All too often the family have no idea how to help. The addict is rarely asking for help or even willing to admit they have a problem. So where do you begin?
Initially you may not even be sure they are using drugs or alcohol or know exactly what drugs are involved. It is essential to learn the signs and symptoms of drug abuse and identify what drug(s) they are using. By becoming knowledgeable about the physical and emotional effects, as well as the increased risks they face, the better prepared you can be in order to help.
When you feel confident about knowing the signs and symptoms, you will need to work out the best way to approach the addict, with a view of getting them the help they need. Most addicts are not very receptive when questioned about their drug use; it is not always easy to talk to them. This is why it’s important to be as understanding as possible, without being judgmental, and show them that you care. When they feel safe to open up to you, guide them into realizing that their drug use is ruining their life. That way, they are more likely to be willing to change their current situation and actually get help.
Sometimes it may be difficult to talk with the addict because of the history of upsets and arguments which have already occurred over the course of the person’s addiction. In such situations it may be helpful to obtain the services of a professional “interventionist.”
What’s important is that you don’t wait but take action. What you do now could save a loved one’s life.
