Staying Sober During the Holidays

Fireworks

For a lot of people staying sober during holidays has probably been trying, this is especially true of those recently out of rehabilitation.

Such times usually bring groups of friends and family together in combination with alcohol. Even those who normally don’t drink to excess suddenly find their normal limits are out the window with parties, get-togethers, mulled wine and excuses to drink at home.

There is no magical solution but here are some tips for getting through the holidays:

  • Remember that as a former addict, staying sober and not drinking at all, is top priority.
  • Only go out with friends and family that will be supportive of you not indulging. Those that push you to drink are not who you want to have around.
  • Have a sober buddy with you when you are out and stay sober yourself.
  • Go to places, or have at your home, yummy alternatives to alcohol such as non-alcoholic punch instead of mulled wine.

The rate of relapse for those in recovery is higher in celebratory times, so it is important to stay strong during these times and keep the purpose in mind of truly what you want—a strong and sober life.

The statistics for emergency room visits are also higher during the holidays as people overdose or get drunk. So remember that holidays are for love, friendship and family, don’t lose sight of that.

If you feel you are past the point of these tips and need more help with alcoholism or drug abuse, do not wait.
