Simple Words for Your Kids Regarding Alcohol

Family at dinner

Parents often wonder how really best to go about educating children and teenagers so that those kids then go on to make good decisions regarding alcohol. Though good drug education is important, you don’t necessarily have the materials on hand at home for that, and anyway is that really enough?

Well, we heard of some good advice that we would like to share…

It is ‘watch what I do’ ‘look how I drink’ and that is an interesting idea isn’t it?

Simply put, children are going to see how you drink anyway but by telling them to look at how you drink, you take notice of those eyes and you make sure to set a good example by it.

It could be simple things like ‘see how I never drink more than two beers’ or ‘see how I never drink during the week’ or whatever fits for you personally. Those simple ideas can become ingrained in a child and teen; it means it is not just ‘I drink, but you can’t!’ which isn’t a great solution for anyone.

The great idea with this is it enforces your own ethics on the subject, and if you err, well then talk to them about it, why was it wrong, what do you need to do about it.

The idea is not to be hypocritical and hide things from your child when they are not around, but rather, be the example you want to see in them.

Something so simple can give your children a guideline, it makes the topic one that can be talked about openly between you and gives you something personal to do about the drinking culture amongst youths.

I hope you can give it a try and let us know what impact it has with your children.
