More Effects of an Alcoholic Mother

Alcoholic mother and son

Another interesting story crossed my path on the radio recently, on the effects of an alcoholic mother. This was from a prisoner, who we will call Rob. He was in prison for multiple counts of arson. Rob is due to be released from prison in a few years, and he wants to work on being able to build real relationships and to communicate with people better. He spent almost his entire time in prison without interacting with anyone, but we find out that this was the case before prison as well.

This is Rob’s story in his own words:

He explained that his mum drank, she would hit him, and belittle him in front of his friends. She would say:

‘What the hell do they want with you for? You don’t have friends, they don’t want to hang out with you! They are just saying they are your friends, you’re an idiot, you are stupid, you are this or that.’ And before I knew it I was thinking, ‘Yeah, why do they want me to hang out with them?’

Especially when girls would come round the house and ask for me, my mum would say very loudly so they could hear,

‘What the hell is she doing here? She doesn’t want to go out with you, look at her, she is cute, she don’t want nothing to do with you. You’re an idiot, what makes you think that she wants to go out with you? She is just trying to trick you somehow.’

And before I know, I would be pushing them away because I am not sure what they are up to.

Fireworkers

Effects of This Childhood

Rob started setting things on fire, abandoned cars or buildings, where no one got hurt. It was like a compulsion. Setting things on fire was a way of avoiding the real pain and struggle he was going through.

Rob’s story continues as he practices social conversations, talking in front of people, and learning to overcome his inhibitions, but I wanted to look at it from the angle of the mother and drink.

Not all drunks are mean drunks, but it appears to be a common attribute. Any bad characteristics can become more pronounced when alcohol takes over, as the inhibitions are lowered, judgment disappears and views of right and wrong often go out the window. When these characteristics appear in a mother, you can end up with such horrible situations as listed above.

A Mother’s Role

Mothers are meant to be the supportive, the loving, the main stable person for a growing child. Most people are not aware of what goes on inside the home, we hope that a motherly instinct if nothing else will help create a good relationship between a mother and child. So this is just one more example of the devastating effects that alcohol can wreak, not just on the alcoholic, but on a poor child, whose whole life path is affected.

I wish Rob and all those like him, the best at getting past such a difficult start in life, and for those like his mother, we need to help faster. To help the person out of the nightmare situation of alcoholism. With good rehabilitation, the mother could be out of the clutches of drink, and hopefully, some sense would be returned!
